Andy Metcalfe

Andy Metcalfe is an associate professor of trauma and orthopaedics at the Warwick Clinical Trials Unit and consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire.

He graduated from the University of Sheffield and did his surgical training on the Welsh rotation. He did fellowships in knee surgery at the Avon Orthopaedic Centre in Bristol, followed by the North Sydney Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centre in Australia. His clinical practice is in knee surgery.

His research includes clinical trials in orthopaedics, patello-femoral instability and arthroplasty, ligament and cartilage injuries, knee arthroplasty and osteoarthritis. He also has an interest in novel approaches to improve RCT’s of surgical interventions. He co-leads the Warwick Clinical Trials Unit, Trauma Orthopaedics and Physiotherapy team. He completed his PhD with the Arthritis Research UK Biomechanics and Bioengineering Centre in Cardiff on biomechanics of gait before and after knee replacement.

Andy maintains an interest in training and teaching and leads the Integrated Clinical Academic Training programme for orthopaedics in the deanery. He is a keen football fan and an enthusiastic (but unskilled) player, and has two young children who keep him active.
